2 questions: Network search mode + GSM and 3G

2 questions: Network search mode + GSM and 3G

Several questions I've never understood. What's the difference between "Automatic" and "Manual" in search mode? I understand the premise of course, but why would you need to have it set on auto as opposed to manual? And vice versa.

And secondly...if I am using a non 850 phone I should just leave the network setting to "GSM" only as opposed to "GSM and 3G" as there'd be no point??

auto / manual search mode

For e.g. An automatic search apparatus for a record/play system of a record medium having a plurality of recorded programs, and a controlling method thereof. The apparatus discriminates the presence of recorded programs on the record medium by picking-up signals from the medium, converting them to binary signals and comparing them with reference to some prescribed terms, thus discriminating the end of a program or recorded region, then finds the start position of it. In a preferred form, the search process includes appropriate stepwise acceleration/deceleration of advancing speed of the record medium. The invention results in a simple and inexpensive construction of an automatic search apparatus for various application fields.

For e.g.A disc player performing a manual search mode in which the play and jump operations are alternately repeated, in response to a manual search command while keeping (S4) the reproducing level at a level lower than the level at the initiation of the manual search command as long as no change command appears. If the change command appears (S2) the reproducing level is shifted (S3) to a level which is designated by an operator so as to adjust the reproduced sound level to an adequate level to listen to the reproduced sound for the music select.
